Pirates make disappointing decision not to let Curve's Sampson pitch in EL All-Star Game in Altoona

July 11, 2014 - Cory Giger
The Pirates have made the very disappointing decision of not allowing the Curve's Adrian Sampson, one of the best pitchers in the Eastern League this season, to pitch in Wednesday's All-Star Game at Peoples Natural Gas Field.

Sampson (6-5, 2.89 ERA) might have been in line to start the game since he's fourth in the league in ERA. He is scheduled to pitch Saturday night at Harrisburg, then his next scheduled start would be Thursday in the first game after the All-Star break. The Pirates apparently don't want to alter his regular routine and therefore will not allow him to pitch Wednesday.

I'll have more on all this in tomorrow's Mirror, including hopefully comments from Pirates officials, who have yet to comment on the matter today. But suffice to say, the Pirates are being short-sighted and overprotective here since it would not be much trouble at all to alter Sampson's schedule so he can pitch.

The only positive out of today's decision by the Pirates is that it opens up a spot on the All-Star roster, and that spot is going to Curve reliever Kenn Kasparek.
