The Grooves Return!
April 4, 2014 - Jim Price
Chris Vipond and the Stanley Street Band have been absent from area stage action for much of this past winter; hibernating as they create new music and work on a new album. As part of this weekend’s area music scene highlights, keyboard man and singer Chris Vipond and his current Stanley Street Band cast of bassist Mike Stanley, guitarist C’Jay Castello and drummer Randy Servello return with their groove-driven live show to the Belmar Hotel on Saturday night. Expect to hear some of those new funk-laden groove-rock compositions and established original song favorites, plus the group’s tasty and eclectic selection of cover song material. The fun begins at 10 p.m., no cover.
Another highlight this weekend will be the first Altoona visit from Harrisburg-based hard rock band StarChild, who perform at McGarvey’s (formerly Aldo’s) Saturday night with special guests Lies, Inc. Singer/guitarist Jerry Martin and his wife, bassist Sharon Starr, started StarChild three years ago as a Kiss tribute band. Martin then began to write original song material based on the blueprint of mid-1970s era Kiss, and he and StarChild recorded many of those songs on their first two CDs, 2012’s “Volume I” and 2013’s “Volume II.” Several of those songs sounded so convincingly like early Kiss that fans at the group’s shows asked what Kiss album they were from or thought they were rare Kiss outtakes. As the group evolved into its current form – Martin, Starr, guitarist X Bomb and drummer Brandon Reece – their songwriting evolved as well, into new song material that ventures forward from that Kiss prototype and into a style distinctly StarChild’s own. The group plans to issue their third CD, “Volume III,” later this year. Those attending Saturday’s show at McGarvey’s will hear StarChild original songs new and old, as well as hard-rocking classics from the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s. Lies, Inc. will provide their brand of progressive-flavored modern rock; featuring intricate musicianship and the powerhouse vocals of singer Lily Taylor. The show will start at 10:30 p.m.
Support live music every weekend! And if you plan to celebrate while enjoying live music, please designate a driver or call a cab!
