A Super Weekend of Live Music!
January 31, 2014 - Jim Price
It’s pretty obvious what the focal point for most people this weekend will be, the big football game at the Meadowlands Sunday night between teams from Denver and Seattle and all of the pageantry and hoopla surrounding it. (Oh yeah, and a rodent in Punxsutawney will have something to say on Sunday morning regarding the future of this area’s recent Ice Planet Hoth weather conditions.) The area music scene provides a lot of activity this weekend to get warmed up for that big game, and even some cool-down activity after the game!
Shallow 9 and Ground Crew will provide live music for rocking and dancing at the Jaffa Shrine on Friday evening during the Cabin Fever Party, a fundraiser for the Blair County Respiratory Disease Society. The event starts at 8 p.m.
Later on Friday evening, McGarvey’s (formerly Aldo’s) ushers in the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Horse, with their annual Chinese New Year’s Party. A full-course Chinese food buffet, Asian beer specials and Chinese noisemakers will be offered, with American modern country music provided by favorites Pistol Peg & the Beer Kegs. The music and food start at 10:30 p.m., but get there early as this party becomes crowded fast!
McGarvey’s will also host a CD release show on Saturday night, as local heavy modern rockers Hate Grenade officially unveil their debut EP, “Reload.” Hate Grenade – singer Jeff Glace, guitarist Chuck Lavera, bassist Rich Johnson and drummer Mike Powers – will also welcome two additional bands to help them celebrate the CD release; Williamsport-based metal powerhouse 44Mag and Harrisburg-based industrial punk/metal rockers DeathMaschine. The music starts at 9 p.m.
Sunday features two musical events to help you bide time before the football game. Ukuleles take the spotlight at Penn State Altoona during the first-ever Ukulele Soiree and Petting Zoo event, taking place at the Misciagna Building from noon to 5:30 p.m. A wide variety of ukuleles will be available for children and other interested aspiring uke players to sample, and ukuleles and related accessories will be offered for sale from Gigbox Music. In addition, there will be instructional ukulele-playing workshops for beginner, intermediate and advanced performers, a screening of a ukulele movie, ukulele performances and jam sessions. Admission to this event is free, and all ages are welcome to attend. The event is being presented by the Allegheny Ukulele Kollective and Gigbox Music.
And for a Fab Four warm-up to the Denver-Seattle gridiron battle, the Beatlemaniacs will perform at Patton’s Thirsty Dawg Taverne on Sunday afternoon starting at 4 p.m. Singer/drummer Jerry Carnicella and singer/guitarist Bob Helbig will play a wide assortment of Beatles favorites old and new.
Support live music this weekend and upcoming week! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
