More Festivals, Fairs and Picnics!

August 16, 2013 - Jim Price
The cavalcade of annual fairs, festivals, picnics and other outdoor community events continues to churn as summer season enters its homestretch. And each provides opportunities for area music fans to get their live music fixes this weekend and upcoming week.

Downtown Bellefonte comes alive with arts and music this weekend with the 30th annual Bellefonte Arts & Crafts Fair, which happens on Friday and Saturday. Arts and crafts vendors will be present, along with multiple food vendors and two stages of live music. Some of the featured entertainers include regional bluegrass favorites The Allegheny Ridgerunners and Tussey Mountain Moonshiners; Americana music specialists Biscuit Jam, Erin Condo and the Hoofties and Tyne and the Fastlyne; country rockers AC Express, and the soulful and funky sounds of Jackie Brown and the Gill Street Band.

In Hastings, St. Bernard’s Church presents its annual Homecoming Picnic on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This event will feature plentiful arts and crafts, children’s activities, food and refreshments, and live music. Cambria County vintage rock’n’roll specialists PT Cruiser perform on Friday night, local acoustic favorites Acoustic Stew entertain on Saturday night, and Johnstown’s Flood City Brass provides their annual brassy finale to the festivities on Sunday night. Admission is free. (And a culinary tip from this writer and festival food connoisseur: St. Bernard’s locally-made hot sausage sandwiches are the best I have ever tasted!)

If Polish food is your preference, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Lilly presents its annual Polish Picnic on the church picnic grounds on Sunday afternoon. Kolbassi, halushki, pierogies and halupki will be in abundant supply; and music will be provided by gospel group The Masters, country cats Pop Harker’s Raging Slagg, and regional polka favorites The Hallmarks. Admission is free.

Area motorcyclists and music fans will gather on Saturday to remember and celebrate a fallen friend once again, as the 10th annual Jeffy Showalter Memorial Ride and after-party take place. The day’s events will commemorate Showalter, a friend of the area motorcycle and music scenes, who lost his life in a 2004 motorcycle crash; proceeds will benefit a scholarship fund in his name. Registration for the ride is $25, and will take place on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Duncansville VFW, with the ride starting at noon. The after-party takes place at Blair County A.B.A.T.E.’s headquarters, the Campbell Hill Rec Room near Geeseytown; and will feature live music from Saving Jake and Locked and Loaded, plus DJ Toby. (A third band originally listed, Half Tempted, will not appear due to singer/guitarist Ron Dalansky’s recent injuries from a dirt bike accident.)

And for some farm-related fun, the 47th annual Williamsburg Community Farm Show will take place starting on Monday at the Farm Show grounds in Williamsburg. The event will feature rides, food vendors, plentiful farm displays, exhibits and animals, plus live music nightly from various area country and gospel performers. Admission is free.

There are lots of performers and shows to check out, so support live music this weekend and upcoming week! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
