The Fireworks Continue!

July 5, 2013 - Jim Price
Although the official July 4th fireworks displays have now been set off, musical fireworks still will be happening on stages throughout the region during this weekend and upcoming week; including the kickoff of two of the region’s biggest arts festivals.

Numerous community festivals punctuate this weekend’s entertainment slate, with live music happening at each. The Cresson Firefighter’s Carnival continues on Friday and Saturday nights, with The Boomers providing classic rock and pop entertainment on Friday and Locked and Loaded rocking the stage on Saturday. Carrolltown’s 10th annual Hoo Dang Festival takes place at the community park on Friday and Saturday; Full Kettle entertains on Friday evening, while Pistol Peg & the Beer Kegs kicks up the country on Saturday evening. In Osceola Mills, the Columbia Fire Company’s annual 4th of July Festival continues, with The Jam entertaining on Friday night and Running On Empty on Saturday. The Summerhill Township Fire Company presents their annual Beaverfest celebration in Beaverdale on Saturday and Sunday; Johnstown modern rockers Inside Out provide the musical entertainment on Saturday night. And Morrison’s Cove Memorial Park continues its July 4 Celebration by presenting One Brick Shy on Friday evening.

Wednesday features the start of Philipsburg Heritage Days, which runs July 9 through 14, with entertainment each night.

Wednesday also marks the official start of the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts in State College. Wednesday is Children’s Day at the festival, with the slate of live musical acts beginning on Thursday. Check out the listing below for Thursday’s Arts Festival entertainment, and click on the link on this page to see the entire weekend’s Arts Festival schedule.

The People’s Choice Festival in Boalsburg kicks off on Thursday, with live musical entertainment featured on two stages throughout the weekend. Check out the listing below for Thursday’s musical slate, and click on the People’s Choice Festival link on this page for the entire weekend entertainment lineup.

Another summertime wing-eating event kicks off on Thursday, as the Legion Park Wing Festival will take place on successive Thursdays through August 16 at Legion Park in Hollidaysburg. Admission is free; Felix & the Hurricanes will provide the music for this Thursday’s kickoff.

And if heading to a state park is your preference this weekend, keep in mind that Canoe Creek State Park presents live music at their beach concession on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons through July and August. Longtime area music veteran Jim Mosey will perform vintage rock’n’roll on Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., and the Country Travelers perform vintage country and gospel favorites on Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. Admission is free, and food and refreshments are available for sale from the concession.

There are lots of performers and shows to check out, so pack an umbrella (rain and thunderstorms are possible throughout the weekend) and support live music this weekend and upcoming week! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
