Riding and Rocking!

June 14, 2013 - Jim Price
Although Johnstown’s annual Thunder In The Valley motorcycle rally doesn’t happen until next weekend, the festivities kick off this Thursday night, and a charity motorcycle ride and concert event highlight this weekend’s area live music happenings.

The second annual Bedford County Rock n’Ride for Charity event takes place on Saturday afternoon and evening at the Bedford County Fairgrounds. The event includes a motorcycle run, numerous motorcycle and other vendors, and a day-long slate of live local music, with all the proceeds benefiting 10 different area charities. The live music kicks off at 12 noon with Bedford country performers Midnight Rodeo, and continues with Revised Edition, Vice Versa, Troy Huber (acoustic), The Sitch, Borrowed Time, S.O.L., Money Shot, Tic Tac, Fueled By Ignorance, Ganister and Seize Fire.

Motorcycle weekend in Cambria County kicks off Thursday with the first day of Johnstown’s Thunder In The Valley, Cambria County A.B.A.T.E.’s Bike Fest and Ebensburg’s annual Wheels & Wings event; kicking off four days of motorcycle-related events throughout the Cambria region.

Also in Johnstown, the Johnstown Area Heritage Association presents a free concert on Friday evening featuring national recording group 10,000 Maniacs at People’s Natural Park near downtown Johnstown. Johnstown-based rhythm and blues performers Smooth Sounds open the concert at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but tickets are required; limited tickets are still available and can be obtained at Johnstown and Cambria County locations while supplies last. Recently marking their 30th anniversary as a band, 10,000 Maniacs rose to prominence in the 1980s and scored several hit singles including “Trouble Me” and “Because the Night,” and helped launch the solo career of singer Natalie Merchant. The current 10,000 Maniacs lineup features two founding members, keyboardist Dennis Drew and bassist Steve Gustafson; along with singer/viola player Mary Ramsey, guitarist Jeff Erickson and drummer Jerry Augustyniak.

Two of downtown Altoona’s summertime concert series kick off this weekend and upcoming week. The Burgmeier 2013 Summer Sounds Concert Series launches on Friday night at Heritage Plaza, with Clearfield County country artists Randy Clark and the Renegade Ride providing the music. Food and refreshments will be available, and admission is free. The remaining Summer Sounds concerts include Randy Jackson & Friends June 28, Felix & the Hurricanes July 19, The Fabulous Flashbacks July 26, Quintessence on August 9, and Flight 19 on August 23.

The Blair County Community Action Agency begins their annual Summer In the City Concert season on Wednesday evening, with the Passtime Band performing classic rock and oldies at Heritage Plaza starting at 7 p.m. Admission is free. The Summer In the City concert series includes shows at Heritage Plaza, Valley View County Park Amphitheater and Highland Park throughout the summer months.

And a special benefit event will take place at Altoona’s Heidelberg Club on Saturday afternoon to help out an area family displaced by a house fire. The Kuhn Family Benefit will help raise funds for Jack and Stephanie Kuhn and their three children, whose house in Altoona was gutted by fire last month. The event will start at 1 p.m., and will feature food, a bake sale, Chinese auction, and live music from D.D. and the Pub Crawlers, Not Them Guys acoustic, and This Albatross. Koncept Entertainment Karaoke will then conclude the event. Donation is $10 per person, and advance tickets are available.

There are lots of performers and shows to check out, so support live music this weekend and upcoming week! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
