The Summer Season Begins!

May 31, 2013 - Jim Price
If you accept that last weekend, Memorial Day weekend, is the unofficial start of summer season, this weekend and upcoming week present the arrivals and starts of some of the eagerly-anticipated summertime live music events in our region.

Altoona’s Railroaders Museum launches this year’s Alive @ Five Summer Concert Series on Saturday night with renowned Fab Four tribute Beatlemania Now, with local openers The Sitch. The concert starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10/advance, $15 at the gate, and food and refreshments will be available for purchase. The remaining Alive @ Five concerts include Eagles tribute band Seven Bridges with 7th Gear on June 22, Queen tribute Almost Queen with Highway Divide on July 12, Def Leppard tribute Pyromania with Hair Force One on July 27, and The Clarks with Pistol Peg & the Beer Kegs on August 10.

The seventh annual Day Of Rock benefit concert for Easter Seals of Central Pennsylvania takes place on Saturday at the Saxton Sportsmen’s Club Pavilion. The event kicks off at 1 p.m., and will feature music from the Backyard Rockers, Twelve, Third Degree, NailDriver, Screamin’ Ugly, Ganister and Backlash. Food and refreshments will be available, as well as 50/50 drawings and vendors. Tickets are $10/advance and $15 at the gate.

The annual Lakemont Park WingOffs get an early start to the season on Thursday, with Saving Jake providing the music. Now billed as the WingOff and Barbecue Bash, the event will present wings and barbecued food items for purchase. Beverage proceeds benefit the Lakemont Volunteer Fire Company. Admission at the gate is $5, which includes an all-day ride and slide pass and WingOff entertainment.

Tussey Mountain Amphitheater presents Pittsburgh-based national recording group Rusted Root in concert on Saturday evening, with special guests The Perkolators and Mysterytrain. The concert begins at 5 p.m. Rusted Root is performing in support of their upcoming new album, “The Movement,” and will combine songs from the new album with their best-known hits and favorites. Admission to the concert is $30, plus a $5 parking fee.

And polka fans will converge on Johnstown this weekend for the annual Friendly City PolkaFest, taking place at St. Mary’s Church Pavilion in Cambria City. The event starts Friday evening and lasts through Sunday, and will feature a variety of local and national polka groups, including the Don Wojtila Orchestra, The Rhinelanders, Lenny Gomulka & Chicago Push and more. Admission to PolkaFest is free.

And on area nightspot stages, Aldo’s features the debut of a new modern rock band on Friday night. Hate Grenade, featuring former members of Represent The Lie, will take the stage for the first time to perform originals and select modern rock covers. Also performing will be Johnstown’s 10 Million Devils and Altoona’s Up Your Arsenal.

Support live music this weekend! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
