Celebrating the Earth This Weekend!

April 19, 2013 - Jim Price
An Earth Day celebration and several other noteworthy shows highlight area live music action for this weekend.

Penn State Altoona’s Eco-Action organization is again presenting their annual Earth Day celebration this Sunday, and live music is again a part of the festivities. The event runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and will feature various displays from student groups, environmental-geared organizations and businesses; also guest speakers, children’s activities and food from Fat Daddy’s. The musical entertainment kicks off at 11 a.m. with new local rock quintet Ragdoll Physics, followed by acoustic classics by The Backyard Rockers at 12:30 p.m., a hand-drumming demonstration and drum circle led by Erro Gutshall at 1:30 p.m., and Mysterytrain beginning at 3:30 p.m. With the weather forecast for this year’s event much improved over last year (when colder temperatures and a late-arriving snowstorm impacted the region), most Earth Day activities will be held outside under Laurel Pavilion and near the Slep Student Center; in the event of inclement weather, activities would instead take place inside the Adler Gym.

Also taking place on Sunday is a benefit concert to help an area woman in her battle against breast cancer. The Rockers for Knockers benefit begins at 4 p.m. at Pellegrine’s, and will raise money for breast cancer patient Kathe Karle. There will be a bake sale, door prizes and live music from a variety of area bands and solo performers. Kicking off the event will be the official debut of Skye 2.0, featuring two members from Skye, a 1970s-era Altoona-based band that specialized in progressive and arena rock. The new edition features original Skye members Ken Civils on keys and Bill Hocherl on drums, along with Adam DiFlaviano (“Adam D”) on keys and vocals, Kris Civils on bass and Todd Lane on guitar. Again, 1970s-era progressive and arena rock will be the thrust of Skye 2.0’s repertoire, as the group will perform classics from Yes, King Crimson, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple and numerous others. Also performing throughout the evening will be Brian Cupples, The House Band, Cousin Mike, Left for Dead, Backyard Rockers, Tuckey & Rooster, Colton Fouse, Phil Baskin, The Jam, Ambush, Thrown Together and Jumpin’ Rob.

Three former area heavy rock favorites will reconvene onstage this weekend after a few years away. Choking Faith, Suicide Switch and Chapter 5 all stepped away from live stage action around the turn of the decade to devote energies toward new band projects. All three will return to action with a special triple reunion show Saturday night at Aldo’s.

Support live music this weekend! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
