Norman Nardini and Fall Festivals This Weekend!

October 5, 2012 - Jim Price
One of Pittsburgh’s most famed rock and rollers makes his return visit to the area as part of this weekend’s slate of live music happenings.

Norman Nardini will take the stage of the Altoona Ramada this Saturday night. Nardini will again bring along his current band of longtime bass player and Clearfield County native Harry Bottoms, guitarist Vinny Q, drummer Mike Flocari, and keyboardist and tenor sax player Larry Siefers. Expect to hear “The Manful Handful’s” blend of blues-rooted rock’n’roll, R&B and country, mixed with his trademark sharp wit and sass. This show will reunite Nardini with his local friends Felix & the Hurricanes, and chances are good that the audience will see Nardini and Kos onstage together to generate some guitar fireworks. Local newcomer blues trio The Rhythm Sharks will open the evening. The show begins at 8 p.m.; admission is $10/person.

Fall festivals will also provide live music this weekend. Cresson’s annual Heritage Days opens Friday evening and continues through Sunday afternoon. Country crooner Clay Bowser kicks off the music on Friday evening. Johnstown-based Johnny Cash tribute band Ol’ 97 and The Sharptones provide the music on Saturday, and Sunday will feature John Stiffler entertaining at the Heritage Days car show, while Elvis Presley impersonator Brad Crum and one man band variety performer Zupe will provide the music under the main tent. Admission all three days is free.

Bedford’s annual two-weekend Fall Foliage Festival launches this Saturday and Sunday, and provides continuous music on two stages. Local bluegrass favorites The Blue Shades and western PA-based rhythm and blues specialists Black Coffee will entertain on the Gazebo stage on Saturday, while Ligonier’s Sugar Mountain will blend blues, rock, country, bluegrass, western swing and jazz on the River stage, followed by Canonsburg-based show band The Four Townsmen. Saturday’s Fall Foliage Festival musical itinerary features Pittsburgh blues/rock foursome The Blues Junkies and western PA-based vintage rock/country group Brother Jeep and the Old Shoes Band on the Gazebo stage. The River stage will kick off with the Blue Shades, followed by former Povertyneck Hillbillies singer/fiddle player Chris Higbee and his band. Admission to Bedford’s Fall Foliage Festival is free.

Prince Gallitzin State Park again presents their annual Apple Cider Festival in the Muskrat Beach area of the park, and live music will again be a part of this year’s festival. Johnstown-based Celtic rockers Tree will perform starting at 11 a.m., followed by Cruzin’ at 2 p.m. Admission to the festival is free, and donations will be accepted for parking.
