Police, firefighters deserve increases

This recent increase in pay for the police and fire departments of Altoona have been well deserved.

The Department of Public Works needs a larger increase than mentioned, being that these employees are lowest paid overall.

The APD needs 10 additional officers, and the fire company needs an additional seven new firefighters, in part due to the demand of new services for the Graystone condos, UPMC and downtown expansions and the Altoona Silk Mill.

The resident real estate taxes will have to increase by no less than 3-4 mills until these projects mentioned come back on the tax rolls.

There are many reasons for these multi-million properties being given tax exempt status.

Councilman Jesse Ickes has helped to cut expenses through investment changes and Councilman Dave Butterbaugh through his longtime contract negotiation experience.

Mayor Matthew Pacifico and Councilwoman Christina Jordan have also helped in important ways.

Altoona is truly blessed by their service. Our city depends on them.

David F. Servello Sr.
