New method needed on property taxes

Each year the Mirror publishes a list of delinquent real estate taxes.

Some of these taxes are intentionally ignored and should be pursued. Some of these delinquent taxes are due to not being able to pay a large sum by a certain date.

These people cannot budget that large amount to pay before the end of the tax year.

In Altoona, each property owner is mailed three separate tax notices for that year. Two of these notices are mailed early in February. The other tax notice comes later in June.

Two of these tax notices are for the Altoona Area School District, and the other is Blair County real estate tax.

Only one of these notices allows for quarterly payments.

This payment option is far easier to pay than the two lump sum tax payments.

I would encourage the county and school district to consider quarterly payments.

This would lessen the amount of delinquent taxes, therefore bolstering the amount of money needed to operate the schools and county services much better.
