Upside of pandemic? It’s a laundry list

The extremely brazen maneuver by China in causing a world-wide pandemic affecting over 130 countries is simply just “plain evil.”

It’s now time for the United Nations to stand up for its mission statement and rein in this rouge regime. Meanwhile, back in the mountains of central Pennsylvania, good old Tyrone is a great place to be located.

From our perspective, we need to play the hand we’re dealt.

Avoiding COVID-19 contamination has had a negative impact on our social life. Being retired, our group of senior friends are no longer going dancing three to four days a week at various social clubs in Altoona.

There is no substitute for live music by Flashpoint, The Band of OZ, The Moore Brothers, Three of Hearts, Kick-in and The Flashbacks, just to mention a few. Also, our Silver Sneakers group had to cease meeting twice a week at the Tyrone Wellness Center.

Sally and Charlene sure kept us limber with their exercise routines.

I also miss the Tyrone Burger King morning coffee club group, where we solve most of the federal, state, and local government problems in 15-20 minutes or less and in a non-partisan manner and, of course, we catch up on the latest local scuttlebutt.

Until the restaurants opened last weekend, dining in our SUV at various take-out parking lots brought back earlier days of camping at Black Moshannon.

Visiting our children in Hershey, Pittsburgh and Arlington, Virginia has been curtailed.

We are really going to miss DelGrosso’s Park and Spaghetti Wednesdays, being such a treasure in Blair County.

However, there is an upside to this pandemic. My wife prepares some outstanding cuisine that we can enjoy at home and we discuss my “honey-do” list, which is shrinking since I now have more time to get things done. I can also fill my gas tank every week for about $7.00.

Food marketing has taken on a whole new dimension — I fax in my order, and they call when it’s ready. Very convenient. Yard work has become an advocation, and the lawn looks great and allows me to get plenty of Vitamin D.

I’ve also caught up on all the reruns of Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Virginian and many more great movies and various programs, and I can sleep in.

When I’m out and about, most people are masked and I don’t recognize them, so, I find myself saying “hello,” quite often.

Oh and I almost forgot, my credit score has probably gone up since I’m paying down credit card debt with our stimulus check.

I’m saving on cologne, since I now buy hand sanitizer, and I haven’t had a haircut in three months.

Remember, “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and all those who threaten it,” if you know what I mean. Stay well.
