Too much food wasted at AASD

I am a student in the 11th grade at Altoona Area High School, and I often work in the school cafeteria.

We students help to prepare and serve the lunches each day after they are brought in by the school district.

I am appalled at the amount of food waste that is happening.

Pounds of pasta, vegetables and fruit are tossed in the garbage. Food is constantly going to waste that is not at all bad.

People are going hungry during this Christmas season and every other day.

Frankly, I think it is ridiculous that this is still going on when we have so many families that are down on their luck and cannot find healthy food. It is, in my eyes, a very real injustice.

We have so much to give, and yet the trash cans are more well-fed than some people.

The USDA mandates that the food be thrown away if students do not eat it. I hope that in the near future, there will be a way to cut through the red tape that keeps us from giving this food to the less fortunate so that everyone can enjoy a healthy meal and nothing goes to waste.
