Carl William Alexy, 85, passed away late Sunday morning at Graystone Manor, Altoona. He was born in Philadelphia, the son of Bill and Helen Alexy.

Carl was preceded in death by his brother, Paul.

He graduated from Frankford High School in Philadelphia, Muhlenberg College in Allentown and Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. He was ordained in Reading in 1964.

Carl served as pastor of Trinity, Bowmanstown, St. Paul’s in White Haven, Bethany in Altoona and Grace in Bellwood, all in Pennsylvania.

As a vital part of his ministry, he taught religious education to youth and young adults with special needs. He co-led a camp for people with special needs at Camp Sequanota in Jennerstown.

Carl served as president of Arc of Blair County and received the Teddy Award for his service. He also served on the board of Camp Sequanota, on the youth commission of the Synod and worked with community action.

He met his wife, Dawn, while both were attending Muhlenberg College. They were married on June 15, 1963.

Carl is survived by his wife of 60 years; his three children: Sherry, wife of Brian Harshberger; Kim, wife of Steve Oswalt; and Bill, husband of Lori Stanley. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Tyler and Brandon Oswalt, Madison Alexy, Stephanie Bates and Danielle Johnson; and eight great-grandchildren: Baylor and Anna Haylett, Cole Bates, Raegan and Theo Johnson, and Malcolm, Azalea and Rhea Oswalt.

He was an avid collector of and authority on ’50s music, with a collection of 20,000 records. He wrote poetry and authored a novel.

He touched many lives in a ministry of 50 years.

Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona; and 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, March 14, 2024, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 115 East Penn St., Martinsburg, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Traci Marriott officiating.
