Joseph Samuel Azar DDS

Joseph Samuel Azar DDS, 92, formerly of Glenshaw, died Friday, July 16, 2021, at Sunrise of McCandless in Pittsburgh. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Cablan Joseph Azar and Julia (Matry) Azar.

Surviving are his former wife, Ruth Kline of Brevard, N.C.; and three children: David Azar of Austin, Texas, Susan Azar (husband Victor Zona) of Brevard, N.C. and daughter Lauren Azar (wife Rebecca Ryan) of Madison, Wis.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister, Helen; and a brother, Cablan “Turk” Azar of Altoona.

Academically, Joe was a 1946 graduate of Altoona High School, and a 1949 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown with a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1956, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Doctorate of Dentistry Science and later returned to earn a post graduate degree in Orthodontics. During his career, Joe taught biological sciences at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

Following dental school, he joined the Army in Fort Eustis, Va. serving as a Captain in the U.S Army as a dentist. Upon returning from the service, he began his post graduate studies and eventually opened a private practice specializing in orthodontics serving the North Hills for over 35 years.

Family and friends will be received from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 2021, at Neely Funeral Home, 2208 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw. Interment will be at 2:30 p.m., Lot 298 in Woodland 3 of Grandview Cemetery in Johnstown.
