Francis Roy ‘Fran’ Mentzer

Francis Roy “Fran” Mentzer, 82, of Patton, passed away unexpectedly Sunday at UPMC Altoona surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Altoona, son of the late John Earl and Bernadine Helen (Lockard) Mentzer.

In 1997, he married Janet Louise Stouffer in the Poconos.

Surviving are his wife, Janet; two children: Terrance B. “Terry” Mentzer and Steven F. Mentzer and his wife, Rebecca, all of Altoona; two stepsons: Robert L. Creamer Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Duncansville and Jody L. Creamer and his wife, Dianne, of Altoona; seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers: Dave, John, Donald and William Mentzer; and a sister, Mary Jane Caldwell.

Fran attended Altoona High School and joined the United States Navy in 1956 aboard the USS William A. Lee until 1959. He worked at Warnaco Sportswear from 1960 until it closed in 1992. He then worked at HR Carpenter until his retirement in 2001. Fran enjoyed driving for Health Ride of Northern Cambria for seven years following his retirement.

Francis was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He was proud of the home he built and spent countless hours of upkeep and improvements to make it their dream home. He was a passionate fan of Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers football. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his family.

Fran will be deeply missed by all that knew him.

A funeral service with military honors will be held at noon Friday, July 23, 2021, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, with the Rev. William Bonin officiating.
