R. Samuel Magee, MD

June 25, 1947 – May 15, 2021

R. Samuel Magee, MD, 73, Altoona, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday.

Dr. Magee was born in Altoona, son of the late Dr. Richard B. and Anna Louise (Shimer) Magee. On June 12, 1976, he married Susan McClain, who survives.

Surviving are his wife; a son, Rich Magee (Desiree) of Lake Forest, California; a daughter, Katie Fiore (Michael) of Hollidaysburg; four grandchildren:

Adelaide, Daphne, Sophie and Charlie; three brothers: Michael Magee (Lynn), Timothy Magee (Yolanda) and Daniel Magee (Elaine); and a sister, Molly Magee (Jon Greenwood).

After graduating from Altoona High School in 1965, Dr. Magee earned a bachelor’s degree from Penn State University in 1969 and a master’s degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1972. He graduated from Temple University Medical School in 1976.

He began his 45-year medical career in residence at Geisinger Medical Center in 1976, culminating in tenures as Chief Resident from 1980-81 and a Vascular Surgery Fellow from 1981-82. He returned to Altoona in 1982 to join his father’s private practice and the staff at the Altoona Hospital. He served as President of the Medical Staff from 1998 to 2002 and as Chairman of the Department of Surgery from 1987 to 2016. Dr. Magee also worked at Nason Hospital and Heath South from the time of his return to Altoona until his death. In 2015, Dr. Magee joined the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center, becoming Chief of Staff there in 2018 and serving to the present time.

Sam was a devoted part of the Altoona community. He was a lifelong member of Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church. For many years, he was a volunteer youth sports coach.

Friends will be received from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, June 26, 2021, at the Parish Hall, Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church at 806 13th Street, Altoona. A memorial service will immediately follow at 1 p.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. A private interment at Rose Hill Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made in Sam’s memory to the James E. Van Zandt Medical Center.
