John J. Kovach Jr.

John J. Kovach Jr., 92, Patton, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday. He was born in Hastings, the son of John J. and Edna A. (Weakland) Kovach Sr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude C. (McConnell) Kovach; grandchildren: Christopher and Ashley Saunders; sisters: Mary Elizabeth McQueeny, Ruth Edwards and Dorothy Kovach; and son-in-law, Robert Rematt.
He is survived by children: Catherine E. (Richard) Hayes in Florida, Pamela M. (Kevin) Young of Zelienople, John J. Kovach IV of Patton, Theresa A. (Paul) Saunders in Maryland, Walter J. (Debbie) Kovach of Patton, Carl J. Kovach of Patton, Helen M. (Wayne) Dunnett in Canada and Laura A. Rematt of Patton; 18 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great–granddaughter on the way; brothers and sisters: William J. (Phyllis) Kovach of Patton, Bernadette Horengic in Maryland, Kathleen Morris in Maryland, Constance (Curtis) Church in Florida, and Robert (Iris) Kovach in Arizona; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He served in and retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years as a Chief Warrant Officer 2. After returning to Patton, John worked at the coal mines and retired after 21 years. He was a lifetime member of the Carrolltown American Legion Post 506 and lifetime member of the Patton VFW Post 779.
John loved hunting, fishing, bowling, working on lawn mowers and making homemade carpets.
Friends will be received Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2021, from 2 p.m. until the 5 p.m. funeral service at Stevens Funeral Home Inc., 1004 North Fifth Avenue, Patton, by the Rev. Jeremiah G. Lange OSB. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Patton.
