Betty LaRee Walls Manspeaker
Sept. 22, 1923 – July 27, 2020
Betty LaRee Walls Manspeaker, 97, Tyrone, passed away peacefully in her sleep Monday. She was born in Hollidaysburg, a daughter of the late Irvin D. and Margaret (Replogle) Walls.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Strayer; a brother, Irvin D. Walls; and Dean W. Manspeaker.
Surviving are two daughters: Eileen (Lynn) Steinkraus of Rockville, Md., and Peggy Manspeaker of Port Ludlow, Wash., to whom she was a devoted and beloved mother.
Betty graduated from Hollidaysburg High School in 1941 and was a member of the Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II, stationed in Baltimore, Md. She also worked at Slinky Toys and the Proctor Silex Corp.
She loved flowers, gardening, animals and travel. Her quiet demeanor belied a quick wit and adventurous nature, having ridden camels, flown in a two-seater airplane over the Outer Banks in North Carolina and skateboarding in her early 80s. She was also an accomplished oil painter. Active and alert to the end, for the last 10 years she has greatly enjoyed the fellowship of her many friends at Graystone Court in Tyrone.
Respecting her wishes, her funeral and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to support a favorite animal shelter or rescue organization or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
Interment will be at Dry Hill Cemetery in Bedford County. Arrangements are by the Derman Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone.
