Walter L. Vinglas

Nov. 15, 1926 - March 24, 2020

Walter L. Vinglas, 93, Cresson, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday at Vindobona Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Frederick, Md.

He was born in Gallitzin, son of the late Joseph and Catherine (Abretski) Vinglas.

Surviving are his daughter, Carol L. Plunkett and husband, Richard, of Middletown, Md.; five grandchildren, Oriana L. Poruban and husband, Timothy, of Lilly, Walter I. Vinglas of Cresson, Matthew R. Plunkett and wife, Melissa, of Myersville, Md., Adam C. Plunkett and wife, Jennifer, and Cara L. Plunkett, both of Middletown, Md.; seven great-grandchildren: Jestin, Jorydn and Jerry Poruban, all of Lilly, Tyler Vinglas of Portage, Harper and Ellis Plunkett of Myersville, Md., and Makenna Plunkett of Middletown, Md.; a brother, Thomas Vinglas and wife, Judy, of Cresson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marjorie O. (Chernesky), who he married on June 7, 1948, and with whom he shared 68 years; two sons: Walter P. and Lawrence P. Vinglas; six brothers: George, John, Michael, Joseph, Frank and Leo Vinglas; and four sisters, Francis Stasik, Helen Zabinsky, Victoria Koeck and Mary Ksiazkiewicz.

Walter was a WWII U.S. Army veteran who went on to have many careers over his lifetime. He worked in a coal mine, on the railroad, had a barbershop and finally retired in 1981 from the Van Zandt VA Medical Center, Altoona. In his retirement he always had some project to keep him busy. He could be found building, fixing, bulldozing, mowing or buying and selling something.

He also enjoyed hunting, playing cards and spending time with and helping his family. In his later years, his highlights were good food, desserts — especially ice cream — and visits from his family. He faced many health problems with strength, courage and humor.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to his niece, Theresa Vinglas, for her loving care and support.

Due to the recent COVID-19 recommendations and restrictions, the family will have a private viewing and service, Rev. Leo Arnone, celebrant. Entombment will be in St. Francis Xavier Church Cemetery. A memorial Mass will be held at a later date for the public.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Cambria Alliance EMS, 725 Second St., Cresson, PA 16630, or the Cresson Public Library, 231 Laurel Ave., Cresson, PA 16630.

Arrangements are by Anderson Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 233 Keystone Ave., Cresson.
