Anna M. ‘Deet’ Gates

Anna M. “Deet” Gates, 84, a resident of Haida Healthcare, Hastings, formerly of LaJose, died Sunday at Haida.

She was born in Cresson, daughter of the late Sarah Jane (Yost) Hebdon.

Surviving are three children: Bernard Jr. (Diane Howard) of Bellefonte, Barbara “Jeanie” (James) Fickes of Swansea, Ill., and Richard of LaJose; three grandchildren: Kelly, Michael and Kristen Fickes; a brother, James (Janice Noonan) Yost in Mississippi; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Gates Sr., on Dec. 25, 2009; a son, Dennis, in 1970; her uncle, Frank Yost and aunt, Aggie Yost, who raised her; a brother, Russell Hebdon; and a special cousin, Clayton “Bud” Yost.

She worked at a shirt factory in Patton, as a key punch operator at a bank in New Jersey and for Benjamin Coal Co. She retired in 1988. She was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, Hastings.

Deet enjoyed crocheting, cooking and baking.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2020, at Gibbons Funeral Home, 1688 Liberty St., Ashville, where a vigil service will be held Tuesday. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2020, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Frugality, the Rev. Robert Reese, celebrant. Committal will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Glasgow.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Deet’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
