Myrtle Elizabeth ‘Betty’ (Cremer) Nye

Aug. 8, 1932 - Dec. 25, 2019

Betty (Cremer) Nye, 87, a resident of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., formerly of Huntingdon, died peacefully Christmas morning following a brief illness. She had been living at Woodlawn Commons, a senior community.

Born in Huntingdon, Betty was the firstborn of the late William E. and Myrtle I. (Parks) Cremer. She was graduated as co-valedictorian from Huntingdon High School in the class of 1950.

As a young adult, she spent several years living and working in Philadelphia, where she became a model for the YWCA, with posters featuring her photo used on city buses and subway cars.

She returned to Huntingdon to marry and build a life with Harry H. Nye. They were united in marriage Feb. 13, 1954, by the Rev. Richard Winters at the Abbey Evangelical and Reformed Church, where Betty was a member. During their time in Huntingdon, Betty was active in several bridge clubs, as well as a number of community activities, such as Beta Sigma Phi sorority, DAR, community theatre, and Huntingdon Bicentennial.

They later moved to Bridgewater, N.J., where they lived until Harry’s sudden passing in 1982. In 1979, Betty was graduated with honors from Rutgers University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English.

Following her husband’s death, she used her education in several professional settings, including an investment firm, a realty company, and two optometrists’ offices, where she enjoyed learning new skills until her retirement in the 1990s.

Betty was an active member of the Bridgewater United Methodist Church, where she volunteered with hospitality ministries among homeless and hungry neighbors, participated in a prayer group, women’s circle, and was a Communion steward. She also volunteered with the American Cancer Society as a driver for neighbors with medical appointments and treatments.

She enjoyed traveling with Harry, both on his business trips and for their own enjoyment; later in life, she traveled here and abroad with friends. She also committed time weekly to care for her first grandchild.

Surviving are a son, David E. (Deanna) Nye; a daughter, Holly E. (Ken Williams) Nye; five grandchildren: Chloe I. and Jonah M. Williams and Trevor, Bailee and Tyler Nye; a sister, Dorothy J. (Glenn) Hoover; a number of special nieces and nephews; and extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins. She valued friends and dinner companions at Woodlawn Commons and Prestwick Chase.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Ann Nye Hohman; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

A funeral service was held Dec. 29, 2019, at Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church. A committal service will be held April 18, 2020 at Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon at a time to be announced.
