Joseph G. Lipple

Joseph G. Lipple, 95, a resident of the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, formerly of Ashville, died Sunday at the Veterans Home.

He was born in St. Benedict, son of the late Anthony and Caroline (O’Connor) Lipple.

Surviving are children: Tom (JoAnne), Lois Eger, Cathy “Kate” Klepser, Dan (Deb), Rick (Terri), Mary Ann (Tom) Doughty, John (Sylvia), Cindy (Kevin) Rolston, and twins, Jean (Mark) Little and Joan (Dennis) Leverette; a son-in-law, Joe Trapanotto; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by wife, the former Mary Holmberg on Feb. 14, 1960; a son, Donald “Bucky;” a daughter, Jane Trapanotto; a granddaughter, Mary Lipple Smetana; a great-grandson, Gregory Lipple; a son-in-law, Frank Eger; and siblings: Anna, Mary Catherine, Peg, Paul and John, who was killed on the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He was the last member of his immediate family.

Joe was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, where he arrived at Pearl Harbor one week after the attack. He worked at the A&P Warehouse, Altoona, for 40 years and retired in 1982.

He was a member of the Hollidaysburg Sportsmen and a life member of the Railroader Museum, the NRA and the John Lipple Post No. 4315 Ashville VFW, where he served as a Post Commander and also served as a County Commander.

Joe enjoyed spending time with his family, riding his motorcycle until the age of 92, hunting and golfing.

At the request of the deceased there will be no viewing. Military rites will be accorded at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019, at the Ashville VFW by the Ashville VFW and other local military organizations. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Ashville, the Rev. Robert Reese, celebrant. Committal will be at St. Thomas Cemetery. Arrangements are by Gibbons Funeral Home, 1688 Liberty St., Ashville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Joe’s memory be made to the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home
