Aug. 9, 1921 - Oct. 6, 2019
Sarah Payne, 98, of Hollidaysburg died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019.
She was born in Tyrone, the daughter of the late Charles E. and Ellen Murray Burns. On Jan. 29, 1946, she married Philip J. Payne at St. Matthew’s Roman Catholic Church in Tyrone, and Philip preceded her in death.
Surviving are her two sons: Charles (wife, Alicia) and Philip (wife, Carol); four grandchildren (her “P-TEAM”): Tim (wife, Andrea), Erin, Aileen and Molly; and three great-granddaughters: Antoinette, Alice and Madison.
She was a lifelong resident of Tyrone, having been born in the family home on Cameron Avenue and living on Ninth Street, Washington Avenue and Hamilton Avenue until moving to Garvey Manor in 2011.
She was a member of St. Matthew’s Church. She was a graduate of St. Matthew’s School in 1935 and Tyrone Area High School in 1939. Before marrying, she worked at the A&P in Tyrone. When her sons were older, she returned to work at Juniata Packing Co.
Among her interests were needlework, ironing (she laundered and ironed, with love, the church linens at St. Matthew’s for over 40 years), playing cards, word puzzles and baking cookies for her grandchildren. But her deepest love, other than her God and her church, was her family, who will miss her guidance and love.
Friends will be received at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019, at Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew’s Roman Catholic Church Tyrone. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
