J. Austin ‘Aus’ Walter

J. Austin “Aus” Walter, 92, Roaring Spring, died Tuesday at UPMC Altoona after an extended illness.

He was born in Roaring Spring, son of the late William Clay and Sarah Stella (Lingenfelter) Walter. He married Gladys “Maxine” Smeltzer, and she died on Oct. 30, 2009.

Surviving are two sons: John Walter Jr. and wife, Brenda, of St. Peters, Mo., and Joseph Walter and wife, Lynette, of Martinsburg; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a brother, William K. Walter of Ypsilanti, Mich.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Freda.

Austin attended Barley Lutheran Church. He was a 1943 graduate of Morrison Cove High School. He was a dairy farmer in the Cove for many years and retired from E.F. Smith Trucking, and he had also driven school buses for Smith Busing.

Austin was a 50-year member of The Woodbury Lodge F&AM No. 539, where he had served as past master. He was also a member of the Temple Association and the Consistory Bodies of the Valley of Altoona.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018, at Todd T. Thompson Funeral Home Inc., Roaring Spring. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, 2018, at Barley Lutheran Church, Senior Pastor Roy Steward, Pastor Mark A. Lingenfelter and Associate Pastor Rev. Dr. Philip Steward officiating. Inter­ment will follow in Green­lawn Cemetery, Roaring Spring.

Contributions in Austin’s memory may be given to Good Time Gospel Hour – WJSM Radio or to John’s Way Medical Equipment Ministry.
