Harold Meredith ‘Moose’ Beringer

Harold Meredith “Moose” Beringer, 89, Tyrone, died Sunday at UPMC Altoona.

He was born in Tyrone, son of the late Harold Elton and Hazel Meredith Beringer. On Dec. 27, 1952, he married Elizabeth “Lou” Ann Bayer, at the First Presbyterian Parsonage, Tyrone.

Surviving are his wife; three daughters: Andrea L. Beringer, Barbara H. Beringer and Colleen B. Warren; two grandchildren: Rachael M. Shaffer and Patrick H. Warren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Harold P. Beringer.

Moose was a 1947 graduate of Tyrone High School and served in the armed forces first in the U.S. Navy and then in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Cold War Era. He then attended Illinois Institute of Technology, Lock Haven State College and Penn State University. On July 11, 1973, he was hired as a narcotics agent in the office of the Pennsylvania Attorney General until his retirement on Dec. 20, 1991.

He was a Boy Scout and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He was also a member of many clubs and organizations including The Creation Club; Mountain Lodge No. 28/

F&AM of Pa.; Bavarian Aide Society; Unter Uns; Swiss Club of Altoona; Fraternal Order of Eagles; Blazing Arrow Hook and Ladder Co.; The Masons Valley of Altoona; The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry; Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks Lodge 212; Howard Gardner American Legion Post 28; Anderson-Denny VFW Post 4559; NRA; The Military Order of the Cootie; Pennsylvania Sheriff’s Association; Fraternal Order of the Police; Bucky Fisher Groundhog Club; Mystic Groundhog Order of Hunters; and the Loyal Order of the Moose.

A private interment service will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone.
