Margaret J. Fleming

Margaret J. Fleming, 87, Delray Beach, Fla., formerly of Altoona, died Tuesday in Delray Beach, Fla.

She was born in Altoona, the youngest child of the late Andrew Joseph and Mary Ellen (Gibbons) Fleming.

Surviving are two sisters: Winifred (William) Boland of Pittsburgh and Ann (Paul) Brannan of Bethel Park; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five brothers: Monsignors Joseph and Patrick, and John, James and Garrett Fleming; and four sisters: Ellen McNelis, Sarah Luddy, Catherine Muri and Mary Swope.

Margaret graduated from Altoona Catholic High School. She professed her vows with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden in 1950 and dedicated her life to Cath­olic education, serving as a teacher or principal over the course of a career that spanned more than 40 years. She served from 1967-78 as the principal of St. Angela Merici School, White Oak, now a part of Mary of Nazareth Catholic School. She moved from there to Our Lady of Victory Catholic School in State College, where she served as principal from 1979 until she retired in 1993. Upon her retirement, Margaret joined her brothers Joseph and Patrick in retirement in the Delray Beach area.

Friends will be received, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2017, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Father Lubomir Strecok officiating. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Margaret’s memory to the parishes and schools she served and supported, including Our Lady of Victory Catholic School, 800 Westerly Parkway, State College, PA 16801, Mary of Nazareth Catholic School (formerly St. Angela Merici), 1640 Fawcett Ave., White Oak, PA 15131, St. Julianna School, 4335 S.
