Woman identified in fatal accident

The woman who was killed in a violent crash on Johnstown Road late Saturday afternoon has been identified as Courtney Skyler Knopsnider, 19, of Normalville, near Dunbar in Fayette County.

A passenger in her car, Amanda Dewitt, 19, of White, also Fayette County, was critically injured but is in stable condition at UPMC Altoona where she was taken after being cut from the badly damaged vehicle.

Dewitt was transported from the scene to UPMC by helicopter.

The accident remains under investigation by Sgt. Nathan W. Claycomb of Freedom Township police.

According to Blair County Coroner Patty Ross, the women were on their way to visit Knopsnider’s boyfriend, who lives in the Blair County area.

Knopsnider was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, traveling east, coming down Johnstown Road.

Her vehicle went out of control while rounding a left-hand curve. It traveled across the westbound lane and struck a guardrail, then a tree, according to Freedom Township police. Ross said Knopsnider died instantly of a neck injury.

Driver injured in Antis Twp. crash

A 23-year-old Altoona woman was taken Saturday night to UPMC Altoona suffering from what police called a major injury that occurred when her vehicle hit a telephone pole along Old Sixth Avenue Road in Antis Township.

The driver was identified by state police in Hollidaysburg as Megan N. Mignona. She was driving a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander south on Old Sixth Avenue Road and was exiting a left-hand curve when it left the roadway. The accident occurred near Dickinson Lane. The vehicle came to rest in a driveway.

– Brittany M. Goodman, 26, Huntingdon, suffered minor injuries Wednesday when she lost control and crashed her vehicle on Coverdale Road, north of New Beginnings Road, in Woodbury Township. Goodman was heading south on Cover-dale Road when she said she swerved to avoid a deer. Her vehicle left the road and slid across a Pennsylvania Game Commission access road. After striking a large stump and rock, the vehicle spun around and rolled onto its passenger side and roof, then came to rest against a tree with the front bumper and hood embedded in the ground. Williamsburg ambulance transported her to UPMC Altoona for treatment of injuries.

– Three people were injured Saturday in a two-vehicle crash on Brumbaugh Road, near Lafayette Road, South Woodbury Township. Bradley C. Smith, 28, Hyndman, was heading east just before noon on Brumbaugh Road when he lost control on a curve and struck the front driver’s side of a vehicle driven by Jennifer L. Ebersole, 36, New Enterprise. Smith and two passengers, a 16-year-old boy and a 10-year-old boy, suffered injuries and were transported by Southern Cove ambulance to UPMC Altoona for treatment. Both vehicles were towed from the crash site. Smith was cited with driving too fast for conditions.

– Scott M. Hugo Jr., 37,

Altoona, and Joshua T. Leibfreid, 36, Bedford, were taken to UPMC Altoona after their vehicles collided during the morning of Oct. 1 on Route 220, Bedford Township. Hugo was cited for driving on roadways laned for traffic.

Philipsburg state police

– Helen S. Knepp, 59,

Morrisdale, was injured when her SUV and a van driven by Edward O. Millinder, 84, West Decatur, collided Wednesday morning at Ninth and Railroad streets, Philipsburg. The Knepp vehicle rolled over after impact. A passenger in the Knepp vehicle, Richard Knepp, 64, Morrisdale, also was injured. Helen Knepp was cited for a traffic signal violation.

– Ryan T. Mortimer, 22, Port Matilda, was injured when his pickup truck struck an embankment and rolled over Tuesday morning at Benner Run and Huckleberry roads, Rush Township. A passenger, Edward E. Hamer Jr., 32, Port Matilda, also was injured. Mortimer was cited for driving too fast for conditions.

– An SUV driven by Kimberly A. Hoffner, 36, Morrisdale, went down an embankment and struck a tree Friday afternoon on Benner Run Road, Rush Township. Hoffner was cited for driving too fast for conditions.

Clearfield state police

– An SUV driven by James M. Hicks, 64, Falls Creek, and a pickup truck driven by Amy L. Murgash, 28, Clearfield, collided Tuesday afternoon at Barrett and Independence roads, Bradford Township. Hicks was cited for a stop sign violation.

– A car driven by Samantha E. Imler, 18, Fishertown, struck a tree Saturday evening on Cuppett Road, Napier Township. Imler was cited for driving vehicle at safe speed.

Huntingdon state police

– An SUV driven by Rebecca J. Thompson, 20, Johnstown, and a pickup truck driven by Beau M. Patton, 23, Bellwood, collided Saturday morning on Pine Ridge Road, Hopewell Township. Thompson was cited for driving vehicle at safe speed.

Philipsburg state police

– William B. Sypin, 24, was charged Sunday with careless driving in Rush Township, Centre County. A police report said Sypin fell asleep and his vehicle, a Pontiac Grand Prix, struck a house. Neither Sypin nor the homeowner were injured.

— Edward M. Novak, 56, 430 Novak Road, was treated at UPMC Altoona after his vehicle rolled over Saturday evening on Veterans Memorial Highway. Novak was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.

Tyrone police

— Scott Holliday, 23, no address listed, was arrested for DUI, texting while driving and roadways laned for traffic following a single-vehicle crash at 3:50 a.m. Monday on the 700 block of Washington Avenue. Holliday’s vehicle struck a light pole.

Hollidaysburg state police

— John J. Mitaly Jr., 77, of Murraysville was cited for roadways laned for travel after his vehicle while traveling north on I-99 near mile marker 54 in Snyder Township went off the left side of the road, struck a guardrail, traveled back across the road and hit a ditch on the right side. Mitaly suffered minor injuries and was taken by AMED to Tyrone Regional Health Network.

— Brandyn D. Beaver, 17, Alum Bank, was injured when his pickup truck ran into a ditch and came to rest on its passenger side during the morning of Sept. 7 on Cider Press Road, West St. Clair Township. Passengers Tanner E. Fetter, 16, Schellsburg, and McCall J. Dunn, 17, Alum Bank, were injured and taken to UPMC Bedford Memorial. Beaver was charged with DUI and driving on roadways laned for traffic.

— A truck driven by John B. Zollinhofer, 43, Patton, struck a guardrail Monday afternoon on Route 56, West St. Clair Township. Zollinhofer was cited for driving on roadways laned for traffic.

— Erica N. Bittinger, 17, Artemas, was injured when her car struck a tree Saturday evening on Big Creek Road, Mann Township. Bittinger was cited for driving too fast for conditions.
