50 evacuate Maui as brush fire nears

HONOLULU — About 50 residents on Hawaii’s Maui island evacuated their homes as a fast-moving brush fire fueled by strong winds encroached on their rural community.

Fire officials say the brush fire in East Maui grew to about 500 acres on Sunday night, but recalculated that to about

330 acres following an aerial survey. Officials said it was 85% contained as of Monday morning.

Bill would ban face coverings for police

SAN FRANCISCO — Local, state and federal law enforcement officers who cover their faces while conducting official business could face a misdemeanor charge in California under a new proposal announced Monday.

The bill would also require all law enforcement officials to be identifiable by their uniform, which should carry their name or other identifier. It would not apply to the National Guard or other troops.

Doctor to plead guilty in actor’s death

LOS ANGELES — A doctor charged with giving Matthew Perry ketamine in the month leading up to the “Friends” star’s overdose death has agreed to plead guilty.

Federal prosecutors said Monday that Dr. Salvador Plasencia has agreed to plead guilty to four counts of distribution of ketamine, federal prosecutors. They say the plea carries a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison. Prosecutors say Plasencia called the actor a “moron” who could be exploited for money.

Israeli troops kill 34 near aid centers

DEIR AL-BALAH — Witnesses say Israeli troops opened fire as crowds tried to reach Israeli- and U.S.-supported food distribution centers in Gaza.

The Health Ministry in Gaza says 34 people were killed Monday near the food centers, making it the deadliest day of the near-daily shootings since the new aid system launched last month. Palestinians say they face the choice of starving or risking death as they make their way past Israeli forces to reach the distribution points.

At least 20 wounded in Russian strikes

KYIV — Ukrainian officials say at least 20 people were wounded in Kyiv after a combined Russian and missile attack.

The overnight attack on Tuesday wounded nine people in the city’s Sviatoshynskyi district and another 11 people were wounded in the Solomianskyi district, according to Kyiv’s Mayor Vitalii Klitschko.

150 dead in attack on Nigeria village

DAKAR — The death toll from an attack by gunmen in north-central Nigeria over the weekend has climbed to 150.

Villagers were still digging through burned structures on Monday, counting their dead and looking for the dozens still missing. The previous death toll stood at 100. Assailants stormed Benue state’s Yelewata community late on Friday night, opening fire on villagers who were asleep and setting their homes ablaze, survivors and the local farmers union said.
