State Farm to hike rates
SACRAMENTO — California’s top insurance regulator says he will approve an emergency request from State Farm to raise home insurance rates for roughly a million customers if the company can justify the hike at a public hearing.
The company said it needs to quickly rebuild its capital to prevent a “dire” financial situation after the Los Angeles wildfires destroyed thousands of homes. The company wants to increase premiums on homeowners by 22%.

Plane engine burns
DENVER — A fire on an American Airlines plane after it diverted mid-flight and landed at Denver International Airport sent fleeing passengers to a wing amid billowing smoke.
Airport officials say 12 people were taken to hospitals with minor injuries. The FAA says that while taxiing to the gate, an engine caught fire.

Ship captain charged
LONDON — British police said the Russian captain of a cargo ship that collided with a U.S. tanker has been charged over the death of a crew member, who is missing and presumed dead.
Vladimir Motin, 59, is charged with “gross negligence manslaughter.”

Leader accused
NICOSIA — The Turkish Cypriot leader in the breakaway north of the ethnically divided island of Cyprus is toeing Ankara’s line and doesn’t really speak for the local community there, an activist group said.
The accusations came after Sener Elcil of the newly formed Patriotic Turkish Cypriot Movement, a network of nongovernmental organizations and leftist parties, met with the island’s Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.
