Tyrone Borough Council appoints member-elect Gill to fill vacancy
Member-elect to serve out term left open by Poust resignation
TYRONE — By a 4-3 vote at Monday’s meeting, Tyrone Borough Council members appointed council member-elect Bridgette Gill to fill a vacancy for a term that expires at the end of the year.
Gill was selected over two other residents — Jennifer Bryan and Deborah Kann — who submitted letters of interest and interviewed for the position last month, interim borough manager Kim Gurekovich said.
The vacant seat was created in September when councilman Rob Poust resigned.
Although the term ends at the end of the month, Gill was elected to serve on the council in November’s general election, meaning she will be sworn in again in January, according to Dan Stants, the borough’s solicitor.
Following the meeting, Gill said she appreciated the outgoing council’s vote of confidence in her ability to lead.
“It makes me think that they’re on board with my goals and that means a lot to me,” Gill said, adding she wants to address implementing a rental inspection program in Tyrone.
“I think that it will really help address some safety issues that a lot of the rental properties face right now because there is no oversight to that,” Gill said. “I think that’s something that we can greatly benefit from.”
Gill said she’s passionate about helping others, and after 20 years of living in the borough, she feels she can serve the community in a graceful and fair way.
Latchford honored
In his final act as a council member, outgoing Vice President David Snyder presented a certificate to outgoing Mayor William Latchford, recognizing his more than 30 years of distinguished public service to the borough.
Latchford was first elected to the council in 1993 and has faithfully served as the borough’s mayor since 2017, Snyder said.
Throughout his tenure, Latchford demonstrated “unwavering commitment” to the borough, contributing to the community’s growth, Snyder said.
While addressing the council in his final meeting, Latchford said serving the people of Tyrone was one of the greatest honors of his life.
“It’s truly been an honor to serve Tyrone, and it’s something I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life,” he said.
