Altoona man accused of Sixth Avenue Sheetz robbery

A city man is behind bars after allegedly robbing the Sheetz store at 5706 Sixth Ave. early Sunday morning.
Daniel Adams Sr., 63, was arraigned Sunday night before Magisterial District Judge Paula M. Aigner on nearly a dozen charges related to the theft of multiple cartons of Newport cigarettes.
According to the report, Altoona police responded to an armed robbery at the Sheetz location about 3:43 a.m. Sunday.
An employee said a man, wearing a blue ski mask, was found pulling cartons of cigarettes off the shelf. When confronted, the man said he had a gun and ordered the employee to keep their distance.
As police gathered more information, Adams was identified as a suspect, the report states. Within 30 minutes of the 911 call, officers located Adams sitting in a vehicle parked at his residence. Adams complied with orders to exit the vehicle with his hands up and was detained without incident, police reported.
Adams matched the physical description provided by Sheetz employees and had a BB gun in his waistband. After he was detained, officers saw several cartons of Newport cigarettes on the floorboard in the vehicle. At that time, Adams was taken into custody.
Officers executed a search warrant on Adams’ vehicle and seized the seven cartons of cigarettes he allegedly stole from the store. Additionally, officers located the blue ski mask he allegedly wore while committing the robbery, the report states.
Adams faces felony charges of robbery – threat of serious injury, robbery and terroristic threats, misdemeanor charges of retail theft, receiving stolen property, possession of a weapon, simple assault and possession of drug paraphernalia and summary counts of criminal trespass, harassment and disorderly conduct.
He is being held in the Blair County Prison on $150,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 22 before Magisterial District Judge Benjamin F. Jones.
