United Way of the Southern Alleghenies sets $1.1M goal
From Mirror staff reports
United Way of the Southern Alleghenies announced an ambitious $1.1 million campaign goal for the year — a 20% increase from last year’s total.
The goal was announced Tuesday during the agency’s annual campaign kickoff breakfast at the Imperial Room in Ebensburg where participants also heard updates about a recent fundraiser and diaper drive.
“We have a bold vision of creating communities where all residents are healthy and thriving,” said Karen Struble, United Way president and CEO. “Our efforts are part of a broader strategy to move from charity to change.”
The local United Way’s Power of the Purse fundraiser, hosted Sept. 4 by Women United of the Southern Alleghenies, drew more than 700 guests and raised $62,000 for early childhood programs.
In addition, the event’s popular diaper drive collected 20,000 diapers and 2,000 wipes. UWSA’s diaper bank now distributes more than 14,000 diapers each month to families who need some help.
The agency also recognized the 30th anniversary of the Family Resource Center of Blair County, which has been providing early childhood programs, such as Parents as Teachers, for three decades.
About 80 community members attended the breakfast, which serves as United Way’s yearly showcase of impact and a rallying point for a new season of fundraising. Keynote speaker, Windber Area School District Superintendent Michael Vuckovich, provided a personal message that tied into United Way’s new mantra — United is the Way — and how it is crucial to how we care for each other.
Funds raised during the campaign will support United Way programs that help children and families in Blair, Cambria and Somerset counties with early childhood literacy, food security, utility assistance and other basic needs.
Services are provided through 28 partner agencies as well as United Way’s own projects, including Toasty Toddler, the diaper bank and SNAP at the Market.
