Residents from Bedford to State College are bracing for an incoming heat wave, as soaring temperatures will mark the first heat wave of summer 2025.

Accuweather forecaster Tom Kines said that central Pennsylvania can expect daily highs of over 90 degrees from Sunday through Wednesday before a gradual cool off.

Temperatures will stay in the high 80s, however, through June 29, according to Accuweather forecasts.

The heat, paired with an anticipated increase in humidity level, could lead to a temperature that feels five to 10 degrees warmer than what’s shown on the thermostat, Kines said.

This recent weather is caused by a “heatdome” area of high pressure currently sitting over the Midwest, Kines said, that will move toward the East Coast over the weekend.

Heatdomes trap hot, humid air in one place for an extended period of time, often resulting in sweltering temperatures.

Kines said that residents should limit their time outdoors, especially in direct sunlight, and stay hydrated throughout the heat wave to stay safe.

Pets are also susceptible to heat-related health issues, according to Central Pennsylvania Humane Society animal caretaker Hannah Plummer.

“Absolutely do not, with a bold underline, leave your pets in the car for any length of time during a heat wave,” she said.

Dogs are especially vulnerable to heat stroke as their natural method of heat regulation — panting — is less efficient than sweating like a human, Plummer said.

“Even five minutes (in a hot car) could be fatal,” she said, adding that the internal temperature of a car could increase 40 degrees when sitting in direct sunlight for an hour.

Starting at $2.99/week.
