Clearfield armed robbery suspect waives right to hearing

Harris accused of taking $1,300 at gunpoint from Clearfield Sheetz

CLEARFIELD — A Clearfield County man accused of the armed robbery of a Sheetz store in Clearfield waived his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday.

Richard Earl Harris IV, 29, of New Millport, is charged with two counts of robbery and three counts of terroristic threats, all felonies, along with misdemeanor theft by unlawful taking.

Previously, he was being held in the county jail with no possibility of bail due to the crimes involving a handgun. During centralized court on Wednesday, his bail was set at $1 million.

The criminal complaint details how surveillance footage shows a man, later identified as Harris, entering the store at 11:07 p.m. Saturday, May 3. He was wearing a black jacket, tan pants, tan boots and had a black mask up to his eyes. He had a black backpack strapped over his shoulders.

He walked to the coolers and took out two pint cans of alcohol, walked straight to the counter and waited in line.

When he was at the counter, the clerk asked him to pull down the mask because he was buying alcohol and the man complied. But when he was asked for identification, he told the clerk he didn’t have it. The clerk refused to sell him the alcohol.

At this point, “Harris reached under his left coat area and pulled out a dark colored handgun that appeared to have an extended magazine inserted. The suspect is observed racking the gun as if he is arming the weapon by placing a round in the chamber of the gun,” according to the affidavit of probable cause.

Harris demanded money from the register and the clerk gave him approximately $1,299. He then left with the money and alcohol at 11:09 p.m. The footage shows him walking toward the dumpsters before turning right on Krebs Avenue and moving out of sight.

An employee said the robber was someone who came in frequently, but could not remember his name.

After Sheetz security provided an enhanced photo of the man with his mask down, other employees recognized him as Harris and the Clearfield Regional Police Department was also able to verify the man as Harris.

Harris was taken into custody on May 4 and during an interview with investigators, he allegedly admitted to the robbery.

A search warrant was executed at his residence where police reportedly found the money, clothing, mask and gun used in the crime. They also found an AK-47 rifle and a large amount of ammunition, the report states.

Starting at $2.99/week.
