Residents unhurt in apartment fire
The Altoona Fire Department and AMED were dispatched to the 1100 block of South 10th Street about 3:50 p.m. Friday after being alerted to a grease fire in an apartment.
When they arrived on the scene minutes later, they found that the fire had already been contained, according to Fire Chief Adam Free.
The situation was fully under control by 4:10 p.m., and the two residents were successfully evacuated from the building.
The call came in as a dwelling fire with entrapment. According to Free, one of the residents had difficulty exiting the structure on their own, but was able to leave with firefighter assistance.
The fire was limited to the kitchen area of a two-floor apartment off of Valley View Boulevard, causing about $2,000 in damage to the interior of the structure.
Both residents were unharmed, Free said, and were allowed to return to their home after firefighters assessed the property.
