The Altoona Fire Department was able to quickly contain a structure fire on the 200 block of Crawford Avenue on Wednesday morning.
First responders were able to locate the sole resident of the two-story home and remove him without incident.
Cary Bott Jr., the 56-year-old sole resident of the property, died at UPMC Altoona after being rescued from the building, according to Blair County coroner Ray Benton. An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday to determine the cause of death.
The county Coroner’s Office was dispatched to the hospital for a death investigation at 11:44 a.m., and an autopsy is scheduled for Saturday morning, according to a release.
The 911 call came in around 11 a.m., with the fire department and AMED arriving on scene about two minutes after, according to Fire Chief Adam Free. The fire was successfully contained about 10 minutes later, he said.
The official cause of the fire has not yet been determined, Free said, but it appeared as though it started toward the front of the second floor of the structure, with the majority of the damage constrained to that level and portions of the attic.
Fire and smoke damage along the front face of the building were visible from the South Third Street and Crawford Avenue intersection across from the property.
According to Free, the first floor experienced some water damage due to efforts to extinguish the fire. He did not have an estimated cost of the damage to the home, nor did he know if any pets were present within the building when the fire began.
The two-story home immediately adjacent to the property was undamaged by the fire, Free said.
