County’s chief clerk to stay in post

Socie withdraws resignation

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Blair County Chief Clerk Sherry Socie is staying on the job.

Socie, who took the chief clerk job in September and submitted a resignation notice a few weeks later so she could return to her former job, told commissioners last week that she wanted to stay.

Commissioners Chairman Dave Kessling said Tuesday that the board was thrilled by Socie’s decision. He and fellow commissioners Amy Webster and Laura Burke voted in favor of allowing Socie to rescind her resignation that was scheduled to take effect on Nov. 30.

“We’re grateful and pleased that she’s staying with us,” Kessling said. “And I think it’s going to go a long way with our initiatives.”

In early October, about a month after taking the job of chief clerk, Socie submitted a resignation notice and indicated that it reflected her need for a work-life balance. She had plans to return to her former job with the Blair County Planning Commission.

After Tuesday’s meeting, Socie said after she had taken more time to consider the decision and learn more about the job, she’s finding that she’s enjoying the work.

“I’ve also been able to make some changes with the work-life balance,” she said. “And I enjoy working with the commissioners. It’s helpful that I have had their support and the staff’s support. It makes the job easier.”

Webster said commissioners were very happy to learn last week, while they were at the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania conference, that Socie was going to stay on the job.

“We’re very supportive of her,” Webster said.

While commissioners initially hired Socie in September at $74,000 annually, the salary board voted in late October to adjust her annual salary to $77,097 annually. The change was based on a review of Socie’s resume and the county’s current pay policy, which assigned a 7% increase over the minimum starting pay for the position.
