Mahaffey woman sentenced for striking husband with car
CLEARFIELD — A Mahaffey woman charged with aggravated assault for striking her husband with a vehicle while under the influence of methamphetamine was sentenced Monday in Clearfield County Court.
Sherry Lynn Owens, 53, was originally charged by state police with two counts of aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, disorderly conduct, driving under the influence, three counts of intentional possession of a controlled substance and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and accidents involving death or personal injury.
During sentencing court, she pleaded guilty to the lesser offenses of misdemeanor DUI, disorderly conduct and possession of a controlled substance. Judge Paul E. Cherry sentenced her to serve 72 hours to six months in jail with one year’s consecutive probation.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, on May 15, police responded to a domestic incident between Sherry and Randall Owens in Burnside Township.
The victim reported that he and his wife got into a verbal altercation and he told her he wanted a divorce.
At about 6:10 p.m., she reportedly got into his Jeep and was getting ready to leave. He said he went outside to talk with her and walked behind the car. She put the vehicle in reverse and “accelerated heavily, striking him with the rear of the vehicle.”
The victim said he was pushed into the metal garage door, which broke, injuring him in the chest and arm areas. The garage door collapsed, according to court records.
She then drove forward and away from the residence.
The investigating trooper noted in his report that the victim had multiple bruises on his underarms. He also noted that there was heavy damage to the metal garage door.
The victim complained of chest pain but initially refused treatment, saying he would go to the hospital later. He advised police that she had been using methamphetamine and other drugs before giving them an address where he thought she could be found.
After police responded to that address, they spotted a Jeep with rear-end damage parked there. Sherry Owens was standing near the passenger door.
When they spoke with her, she reportedly appeared to be under the influence.
According to court records, she admitted she and her husband had argued. She said when she left, she backed the vehicle up and struck the garage. She claimed she did not know if she also struck her husband.
Police say Owens had methamphetamine in her pocket and a pipe, buprenorphine and additional pills in her purse.
During a drug evaluation at the police barracks, she admitted to using methamphetamine four times, smoking marijuana in the morning, and taking Xanax through nasal ingestion, the affidavit states.
