Crash claims AAHS student
Member of girls soccer team killed in 1-vehicle accident along expressway
A member of the Altoona Area High School girls soccer team died in a one-vehicle crash on 10th Avenue expressway just past Ninth Street early Sunday, according to information from Altoona police, Blair County Coroner Ray Benton and Altoona Area School District spokeswoman Paula Foreman.
Officials declined to provide the victim’s name or other crash details.
There were two other occupants of the vehicle, according to Cpl. AC Stickel of the Altoona Police Department, who declined to say whether they were hurt.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred shortly after 4 a.m., according to Benton and Stickel.
City police, with help from state police, along with the coroner’s office, are investigating, Stickel and Benton said.
The Altoona Area School District will have extra counseling, along with grief support services available at school today for staff and students, Foreman said.
If any families feel that their children need such support, they can call the district to ask for it, Foreman said.
“It’s a tragic loss,” Foreman said, offering “sympathy and condolences to the family.”
