Coalport man faces felony assault charge in stabbing

Thomas allegedly entered city home and attacked man

A Coalport man faces a felony aggravated assault charge after he allegedly entered a city residence and stabbed a man in the leg.

Christopher Terrell Thomas, 46, was arraigned Saturday by Magisterial District Judge Paula M. Aigner on the aggravated assault charge, as well as one misdemeanor count of possession of a weapon, two misdemeanor counts of simple assault and two summary counts of harassment.

Unable to post $150,000 bail, he was remanded to the Blair County prison.

Altoona police responded about 5:45 p.m. Oct. 25 to a reported stabbing at a residence on the 1500 block of Third Street.

Officers spoke with a witness, who said she was in her home’s dining room talking with the victim when someone knocked on the door. When she answered, she saw it was a male she knew only as “Dutch,” later identified as Thomas, who lived in a halfway house in Coalport, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

The witness said she “exchanged words” with Thomas about returning property they had that belonged to the other. When she walked away from the door, Thomas followed her into the house and she confronted him. The witness said Thomas struck her twice in the right side of her face with a closed fist, the report states.

Thomas then walked toward the victim, shoved him onto a chair, punched him in the face, grabbed his leg and stabbed him in the leg. The witness said this was the first time she saw Thomas with a knife. She then fled the house to get help from a neighbor. The victim also escaped and walked south until another neighbor came outside to help him, court documents state.

The witness told officers she had only known Thomas for a few days and he had only been to her house twice before this incident. When asked if Thomas knew the victim, she said no, the report states.

Officers cleared the house and didn’t find Thomas or the knife. They did locate several pools of blood in the dining room, kitchen area and blood spots on the ground along the line of travel the victim took after he left the residence and walked south, court documents state.

Officers contacted staff at the halfway house in Coalport and gave them a description of Thomas. They said they knew a Christopher Thomas, who went by “Dutch,” but he was not currently at the facility. An employee later contacted officers to inform them Thomas had returned to the facility in an Uber, according to court documents.

When officers went to UPMC Altoona to speak to the victim, they were informed he was being treated in the operating room. The witness was able to positively identify

Thomas as “Dutch” through a photo line-up, court documents state.

Thomas’ preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 6 before Magisterial District Judge Daniel C. DeAntonio.
