Student charged in AASD threat

15-year-old taken into custody in early morning hours before school Thursday

A 15-year-old Altoona Area School District student has been arrested and charged with felony terroristic threats, according to a news release on the Altoona Police Department’s Facebook page.

In a letter to parents, school district Superintendent Charles Prijatelj said the school was notified Wednesday evening of a potential threat of violence to be carried out at the junior high school and contacted the Altoona Police Department.

As a result of the investigation, the student accused of making the threats was taken into custody by officers in the early morning hours, prior to the start of the school day Thursday.

Working with the Blair County District Attorney’s Office, the student was charged with felony terroristic threats and the case has been forwarded to the Blair County Courts, the district and police department said.

The student has been suspended for the remainder of the school year.

There were no other suspects involved in the investigation, and there are no additional threats to the students and faculty of AASD, police reported.

Prijatelj said the district takes all threats of violence seriously and “will not tolerate this behavior.” He encouraged parents to “talk with your children and continue to reinforce with them that if they see or hear something to say something. We need to continue to work together to ensure the safety of our schools.”

Coming days after the school shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, Prijatelj said the local threat has been “unsettling.”

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to those families and that community,” he said in the letter. “As we approach graduation and the end of the school year, we will continue to be vigilant in our efforts to maintain a safe environment for our students and staff.”
