New hires and promotions

Zia Haque has been named as director of Juniata College’s Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies. Haque will also serve as assistant professor of peace and conflict studies.

Haque will oversee all programs associated with The Baker Institute, as well as all academic programs associated with the peace and conflict studies department.

Dr. Chudamani Giri has joined the team of Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center’s Internal Medicine Clinic.

Giri will provide outpatient care and inpatient care at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center and serve as faculty within the hospital’s Internal Medicine Residency Program.

Awards and honors

Jeffrey N. Starkey, a certified financial planner and shareholder at Kooman & Associates, was recently named a member of the 2021 Chairman’s Council.

This is Starkey’s first year receiving this recognition from Raymond James, a financial services firm that has provided brokerage and custody services to Kooman & Associates since the practice was founded by Marty Kooman in 1991. Starkey joined Kooman & Associates in 2014 and, in 2020, acquired the practice with his wife, Kate Kooman Starkey.

Kate Kooman Starkey, a certified financial planner and shareholder at Kooman & Associates, was recently named to the Forbes list of America’s Top Next-Generation Wealth Advisers.

The list, which recognizes advisers from national, regional, and independent firms, Kooman Starkey was the only financial professional from Blair County to be recognized.

Mike Lynch, Bill Sipko, Doug Puchko and Nancy D’Aniello have been appointed to the board of Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Foundation.

Lynch is the executive vice president and the chief financial officer of AmeriServ Financial Inc. in Johnstown. Puchko is the president of Puchko Financial Group in downtown Johnstown. Sipko is the president/CEO of BCL Manufacturing in Windber. D’Aniello is the director of education and training solutions at CTC in Johnstown.

Course completions and certifications

Mingi Chou, project engineer for ELA Group Inc., which has an office in State College, has earned the Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional designation, which demonstrates an advanced level of professionalism and knowledge of sustainable landscaping for a healthier Chesapeake Bay.
