Vigil planned for slain officer

Candlelight service set to honor Russell

A candlelight vigil for slain Blair County Corrections Officer Rhonda Russell will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Central Court building, 615 Fourth St., rear.

The public is invited. There will be a moment of silence, prayers, candles and stories about Russell, who was killed Nov. 17 when an inmate awaiting a hearing disarmed her and was holding her hostage.

Russell was wounded when an Altoona police officer fired a shot at the inmate who moved Russell into the line of fire. She was pronounced dead at UPMC Altoona.

The Blair County Prison Board earlier announced a law enforcement memorial service will be held for Russell at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, at the Blair County Convention Center along Convention Center Boulevard, Altoona.

The service will be open to the public.

Convention Center Boulevard will be closed to regular traffic from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday. The road will be open for those attending the memorial service.
