Coroner confirms hunting death

Incident occurred off Buckhorn Road in Jackson Twp.

The Cambria County Coroner’s office has identified the man who was shot in a hunting accident on Saturday morning.

William Tripp, 71, of Elizabethtown was hunting with friends and family off Buckhorn Road in Jackson Township, Cambria County, when a minor, who was also hunting in the same area, shot a deer and missed, accidentally hitting Tripp, WTAJ reported.

Coroner Jeff Lees confirmed the bullet traveled about 300 yards and hit Tripp’s head. Officials pronounced Tripp dead at the scene, according to WJAC. Lees said the incident was “heart-wrenching.”

Officials ruled the manner of death as accidental and said the minor was related to Tripp. State police and the Pennsylvania Game Commission are assisting Lees in the investigation. An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday.
