Toasty Toddler opens registration period

Distribution center also looking for new donations

Registrations for the Toasty Toddler program are being accepted through Nov. 5.

The program is a winter coat, hat and glove collection and distribution for children from birth through age five.

Toasty Toddler began as a collaborative project started by the Blair County Human Service Office, now the Blair County Department of Social Services, to help the area’s youngest children keep warm through the winter months.

Referrals are made by education, health care and social service agencies serving families with young children as well as by individuals who call the center looking for help. The Family Resource Center at United Way now facilitates the program.

New coats, hats and gloves are needed in boys and girls sizes newborn, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 months as well as 2T to 5T, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and small. Donations to purchase items will also be accepted.

Donations will be accepted at the Family Resource Center at United Way of Blair County, Altoona Area Public Library, Ashley HomeStore, Arts Altoona, Blair Regional YMCA, CONTACT Altoona, Hollidaysburg Area Public Library, Kids First Child Development Centers (Sheraton Drive), Lakemont Park, M&T Bank (Plank Road), Mountain View Eye Associates, Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Blair County, Penn State Extension Blair County (Martinsburg) and the Roaring Spring Community Library.

In addition, the following are conducting in-house collections: Altoona Area School District Learning Express, Altoona Sunrise Rotary, Blair County Department of Social Services, Faith Fellowship/Faith United Church of Christ, PennDOT District 9, Penn-Mont Academy, Pyramid Healthcare, Smith Transport, St. John the Evangelist Church, UPMC Altoona, Veeder Root and YMCA Early Learning Center

Last year, 450 children were served by more than 25 agencies, businesses, schools, churches and civic groups and countless individuals who collected and donated items and money. Generally, all children receive a new coat, hat and gloves or mittens. All funds donated go toward purchasing items for the program. The first distribution is planned for early November.

To register or donate, call the Family Resource Center at United Way, at 814-317-5108, ext. 402.
