Fire damages hockey rink
HASTINGS — A fire significantly damaged the Hastings outdoor skating rink Saturday morning.
First responders were dispatched about 12:30 p.m. for a fire at the rink on Fifth Avenue, with heavy smoke in the area, according to Cambria 911.
While the flames were quickly extinguished and much of the structure is still intact, borough officials said significant repairs are needed.
“There was severe damage to certain areas of the rink,” Borough Council member Melanie Zearfoss said. “We filed a claim with our insurance company, and we’re hoping to have all the damage fixed by next hockey season.”
Zearfoss said the player’s bench and a section of the boards will need to be replaced, but the flames did not affect the concrete playing surface.
The total cost of the damage is unknown.
The damage is expected to be covered by insurance money, officials said.
“If we don’t receive enough insurance money, we’ll try and raise funds for the rest,” Zearfoss said.
Zearfoss said the Hastings Area Hockey Association will play the remainder of its summer hockey season at the outdoor hockey rink in Ebensburg.
Officials from the Hastings police and Hastings fire departments could not be reached for comment.
The cause of the fire was not disclosed.
The Hastings, Spangler and Hope fire departments assisted at the scene, according to Cambria 911.
