Latchford pulls away from Mills
Bill Latchford had two things to celebrate Tuesday night.
He won the Republican primary as mayor of Tyrone by a decisive margin, and his daughter, Mackenzie, sparked the Tyrone Area High School girls to the District 6, Class AA track championship at Mansion Park.
As Latchford spoke about his victory over Charlie Mills, blaring sirens of fire trucks could be heard escorting the track team through the streets of Tyrone.
“Major celebration,” Latchford said.
Latchford received 567 votes to Mills’ 118, or 84%.
He was surprised that he dominated his race, Latchford said, adding he’s
grateful for his
hometown’s support.
“Charlie does a good job,” Latchford said. “I thought it would be closer.”
Latchford, 54, has spent 28 years in Tyrone government, including the last 5.5 as mayor.
He won mayoral election in 2017 after being appointed to finish the final year and a half of Bill Fink’s term.
There was no
Democratic candidate.
“I’m very excited to move on to the general election,” Latchford said. “We’ll see what happens at that point. We’re moving ahead in such a positive fashion that I don’t want to see it deterred.”
Latchford was also keeping tabs on the council race.
“There are lots of prospects on council,” he said.
Mills, a veteran member of Tyrone’s Borough Council, declined comment.
