Blair posts 78% turnout

HOLLIDAYSBURG — About 78% of Blair County’s registered voters cast ballots in person and by mail in Tuesday’s election, based on unofficial vote totals posted Friday.

The turnout is almost 6% higher than reported for the 2016 presidential election, when turnout was reported at 72.37%, reflecting 56,331 ballots from 77,834 registered voters.

For Tuesday’s election, the county counted 63,076 ballots, as of Friday, from 80,499 registered voters. Of the 63,076 ballots, 46,088 were cast in person and 16,988 were cast by mail.

County voters overwhelmingly favored Republican incumbent Donald Trump for president, providing him with 44,714 votes, about 71.05% of votes cast.

Democratic candidate Joe Biden received 17,425 votes from county residents, about 27.6% of votes cast.

The county elections board, which has spent the week opening and scanning mailed ballots, began Friday to review provisional ballots, a task that will continue today at the highway yard.

Provisional ballots are issued at the polls to those whose eligibility to vote is questioned. This year, the county also issued provisional ballots to voters who questioned if the county received their mailed ballots.

In compliance with a Commonwealth Court order issued Friday afternoon, the county is segregating provisional ballots completed by voters who also filed a mail-in or absentee ballot, according to Blair County Commissioner Laura Burke, a member of the elections board.

“We believe we received very few ballots that fit this description,” she said.

Burke also reported that the county had 46 mailed ballots, postmarked on or before Nov. 3, arriving after 8 p.m. Tuesday and before 5 p.m. Friday. That was the time frame put in place for accepting mailed ballots that were submitted by voters on or before Election Day.

Because of pending litigation, Burke said those ballots will be segregated, based on guidance from the Pennsylvania Department of State.

The county received no ballots without postmarks, Burke said, but it did receive a ballot postmarked after Nov. 3 so it cannot be counted.
