AASD dedicates conditioning center

The Altoona Area School District hosted a ribbon cutting of its new Thompson Family Strength and Conditioning Center.

The center is named after the late Bill and Anne Thompson, who gave $100,000 to the AASD Foundation for the district to outfit the center with quality strength and conditioning equipment. The center has 14 self-contained strength areas that include whole rack systems, dumbbells, pulley system, weights, benches and more. The room also features rubber flooring for Olympic lifting.

AASD Community Relations Director Paula Foreman said the space is not just for athletes, but is used by all high school students.

“This facility will have a long-lasting impact on students now and in the future,” she said.

Foreman said Bill and Anne Thompson were Altoona Area High School graduates and long-term supporters of the district.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place Nov. 25 in the Altoona Area High School Fieldhouse. Superintendent Charles Prijatelj spoke on behalf of the school district and AAHS Physical Education Department Chairman Tom Palfey spoke about how the facility is used and the impact that it has on the kids.

Bill Thompson III also spoke. Members of the Thompson family were present.

“It was nice we had the opportunity to get the family together and recognize them for their gift,” Foreman said.
